At 5am on August 24th Lenny Goodell headed out in the dark with a couple ex-BWRs (Chris and Rich) to do his first 200+ mile in a day ride, aka Double Century. He had come close to the 200 mile mark a few times on his single speed mountain bike during solo 24 hr races, but hand never done much more than 100 miles on his single speed road bike.
The route was a 206 mile loop going from Albuquerque to Santa Fa (via North 14 behind the Sandias) then up to Los Alamos via the truck route. From Los Alamos, they took Hwy 4 up through the Jemez Mountains and then down to San Ysidro at Hwy 550. Then Hwy 550 through Bernalillo to Hwy 313 and finishing with the long climb up Tramway and back home.

The climbing on this route was mostly moderate until they got to Hwy 4 and the climb up into the Jemez Mountains. That hurt on the single speed!!
The trio used gas station stores to refuel on water and food. They miscalculated the amount of fluids needed for the section below Los Alamos to the La Cueva store in the Jemez. All three ran out of water on the rollers after the Valles Caldera. Lenny was very dehydrated when they reach the store. He refueled, but was never able to totally recover on the remaining 66 miles to home, making that section one of the more painful parts of the ride for him.
The guys made it up the long climb up Tramway with Lenny trailing off the back and suffering. They regrouped at the top to finish the 4 mile cruise home at dusk. The ride had taken just over 15 hours to complete. An hour longer then they had estimated...
